Biography

Dr. Briana McGeough, MSW/PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. Dr. McGeough's research focuses on understanding and intervening on mental health disparities experienced by sexual and gender minority individuals, particularly disparities in depression and alcohol use disorders. She is currently studying 1). how therapists can better support sexual minority clients, and 2). the experiences and outcomes of sexual and gender minority individuals in 12-Step programs.  

She earned her PhD in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. She attended Brown University where she received a B.A in Sociology and Gender/Sexuality Studies. While completing her MSW at the University of California, Berkeley, she worked as a therapist for LGBTQ clients living with severe and persistent mental illnesses and substance use disorders at Alliance Health Project, a University of California, San Francisco-affiliated community mental health clinic and worked with Seneca Family of Agencies, a large child welfare agency, to develop and pilot a curriculum for service providers about working with LGBTQ youth in foster care; she has also provided therapy in the context of NIH-funded randomized-controlled trials.
